Our Story: A Shared Belief in What’s Possible
Pathways to Hope began with a belief that still guides us today: people need a place where they can be seen, heard, understood, and gently reminded that growth is possible.
We’re Kimberly and Brandon Dixon, a husband-and-wife team whose journey has included caring for children in foster care, supporting families, and helping people build more hopeful futures. Through those experiences, we’ve seen how much it matters to have someone show up consistently, recognize your strengths, and believe in you when life feels uncertain.
For Kimberly, that calling led from working with children and families in residential care to school counseling at Cary Woods and, eventually, to private practice. She loved supporting students but felt drawn to spend more time helping children and families work through the concerns beneath their everyday struggles. Leaving a familiar role meant stepping into uncertainty. Our Christian faith helped us take that next step, even when we couldn’t see the whole path ahead.
Brandon brought his background in nonprofit leadership, Habitat for Humanity, finance, and business operations to help build the foundation for Pathways. Our roles look different, but our purpose is shared: creating a practice where people feel known, supported, and hopeful about the path ahead.
Nature Has Always Been Part of Our Story
Throughout our marriage, we’ve found connection and renewal outdoors. While working with young people in residential settings, we noticed that a hike or time beside a creek often helped them settle, open up, and connect. Conversations that felt difficult indoors sometimes unfolded more naturally as we walked together.
Those experiences helped shape our approach at Pathways. Research offers insight into what we witnessed: time in nature can help reduce stress and repetitive negative thinking, with studies also finding changes in brain activity involved in stress processing.
Today, we bring that understanding into our nature-based and Walk & Talk counseling. Alongside evidence-based therapeutic approaches, the outdoors offers opportunities to practice mindfulness, engage the senses, and explore thoughts and feelings while moving together. We work with each client to determine whether office, virtual, or outdoor sessions best support their needs and goals.
A Place to Connect, Heal, and Grow
Today, Pathways to Hope Counseling supports children, teens, and adults navigating anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), ADHD, self-esteem concerns, trauma, depression, grief, and relationship challenges. We offer in-person counseling in the Auburn–Opelika area and virtual counseling throughout Alabama.
Our practice is rooted in Christian faith, and people of all beliefs are welcome. We take time to understand what matters to you and honor your preferences about whether faith becomes part of counseling.
As our team grows, we remain committed to personal relationships, evidence-based counseling, and an atmosphere where warmth, humor, and honest conversation belong. We bring our strengths, our love of nature, and our authentic selves to this work because we believe authenticity invites authenticity. When people feel safe enough to let their guard down, genuine connection can happen—and that’s often where healing begins.
You don’t have to have everything figured out before taking the first step. Whether you’re seeking support for yourself or someone you love, we would be honored to walk alongside you toward healing and growth
